The Alabama Renaissance Faire sponsors an annual chess tournament that is open to schools as well as an open division for anyone who wishes to play. Chessboards will also be made available throughout the days of the faire.

Chess is a challenging, exciting game that requires what the State Department of Education calls higher-order thinking skills. This tournament will be a unique opportunity for students and others to participate in an activity that will encourage them to think deeply, to analyze and develop strategies.

The Guidelines are as Follows:

  • Someone should be appointed to coordinate an in-house chess tournament at your school. It can be as elaborate or as simple as he or she wishes. From the tournament, winners should be recognized in the following categories:

Elementary: Grades K-3

Elementary: Grades 4-6

   Middle School: Grades 7-8

 Senior High: Grades 9-12

  • Notify the Alabama Renaissance Faire of your school winner(s) no later than Wednesday, October 18, 2023. Email the names to director@thealrenfaire.org.

  • School winners in each division will take part in a playoff at the Alabama Renaissance Faire at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023 on Tuscaloosa Street in front of the Kennedy-Douglass Art Center in Florence, AL. Winners will receive trophies and runners-up will receive this year's Alabama Renaissance Faire poster.

  • An open division will be available to any and all who wish to participate on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.

  • Chess boards and chess partners will be available in front of the Alabama Renaissance Faire Booth (near the fountain) after the tournament ends.
